Locations are the maps you play on in the game. There are currently 4 big "regions" in the game which have at least 7 locations each. Each location starts blacked out by shadows, so you have to explore to see the location lit up on your map. When you reach "100%" searched, the game removes all shadows (even at the edges) and gives you an achievement including a title of "(location name) Explorer"
